Aiyyaa (2012)

Rani Mukherjee plays Meenakshi in Aiyyaa, inspired from Marathi literature, a story that is simple, and relevant to most of us middle-class folks from India's urban society. The film portrays the childlike innocence of a girl who has a crush on a mysterious but handsome man (Prithviraj) in her neighbourhood because of the way he smells. The affair is one-sided as she tries to woo him to escape from her own future of getting hitched to Madhav, a boy selected for her by her parents. Some side-characters are an unnecessary distraction, but the climax is a simple but beautiful surprise.

Memorable moments:

  • The comical interactions between Madhav and Meenakshi as she tries hard to reject his proposals, including one where Madhav's parents ask for her height in order to plan for the size of the couple's bed. LoL!
