Nautanki Sala (2013)

Nautanki Sala, with its brilliantly written script and fabulous screenplay, is truly of this generation's best comedies. Ayushmann Khurana is effortless as Ram, working a theater job in a drama role as (LoL!) Raavaan, who in the process of helping his hilariously comical but heartbroken friend Mandar (Kunaal Roy Kapur), falls in love with Nandini, played by the gorgeously sweet Pooja Salvi. The music is soothing, the dialogues superbly witty, and the overall package hugely entertaining. Ayushmann carries the film in nearly every frame, but Kunaal, reminiscent of Vinay Pathak in Bheja Fry, provides the perfect canvas for laughter.

Memorable moments(there are several!)
  • The comical turn of events when Ram finds Nandini with her boyfriend in the same hotel that he takes Mandar to.
  • The comical take on Ramayana in the theater scenes are central to the plot. Don’t miss Ram portraying Ravaan and Mandar portraying Ram! Are you giddy already?
  • The mellifluous "Saadi Galli Aaja" track picturized on Ayushmann and Pooja is wonderful to watch as well as listen. The song is sung by Ayushmann himself, who is also one of the music composers for the film. (Watch out for this talent!)
  • The "Dhak Dhak karne laga" remix is oh-so-catchy!

Surprise: check out my rendition of "Mera Mann" - another lovely track from this movie.

Maryan (2013/Tamil) - (Preview)

Seems like AR Rahman and Dhanush have another classic lined up this year, as they come together again for Maryan, a highly anticipated Tamil thriller directed by Bharatbala of (AR Rahman's) Vande Mataram (Maa Tujhe Salaam fame). Dhanush is perhaps made for roles such as these - with his rusty looks and earthen smiles that make acting look 2nd nature to him. I reckon he is the Aamir Khan of Tamil cinema, bred in classic method acting sensibilities that are well appreciated. Not 100% sure about the movie, but I cannot wait for the music.

Raanjhana (2013) - (Preview)

If you are still under the spell of  'Why This Kolaveri Di', get ready to watch Dhanush again - this time in his first ever Bollywood outing, the Anand Rai-directed "Ranjhanaa". Co-starring Sonam and Abhay Deol, the film promises to be an intense love story set in Varanasi. AR Rahman is back with what is expected to be one of his finest albums (the sound footage of the actual Aarthi gongs that happen at the Varanasi temple have been used in one of the songs). The trailer looks promising, so lets hope the movie lives up to the expectations.

Routine Love Story (2012) - (Telugu)

This is a simple but lovely rom-com between 2 youngsters through their college lives. Regina Cassandra is bright, chirpy and refreshingly beautiful as Tanvi, while Sundeep Kishan is remarkable in his outing as charismatic, smart and dashing Sanju, a typical college lad who is enchanted with the girl captivating his dreams. While the basic premise of the story is ‘routine’, the movie entertains you because of the freshness of the scenes – which are quite real-world and honest. The supporting actors play their parts well. Mickey Meyer once again excels with this lovely tracks that will annex your playlist for a whole week.

Memorable moments:
  • The slow-mo picturization of the extremely soothing Meyer number “Neethone Unna” that has Tanvi in a graceful saree being chased by Sanju.
  • When Sanju asks Tanvi to decide the fate of their relationship in 10 days, she retorts saying "10 days thokka" (thokka is Telugu slang for crap) - masterpiece!

Fire In Babylon (2010)

This British documentary offers a glimpse into the making of the world's most feared West Indies Cricket team of the 1970s and 1980s. The story is as much about the cricketing heroes of the team as much as it is about the Caribbean people, their struggles, and their manifestation in the success of the team. It accounts for the historical events of the time and the region using cricket as a timeline and as a framework. The film sheds light on the sheer grit, fearlessness and determination that made legends out of players such as Holding, Viv Richards and Roberts.

Memorable moment:

  • Malcolm Marshall, having fractured his thumb and wearing a plaster, batting with one-hand (see pic above) against a fearsome English bowling attack in the 1984 Blackwash series when West Indies defeated England 5-0 in England.

Aiyyaa (2012)

Rani Mukherjee plays Meenakshi in Aiyyaa, inspired from Marathi literature, a story that is simple, and relevant to most of us middle-class folks from India's urban society. The film portrays the childlike innocence of a girl who has a crush on a mysterious but handsome man (Prithviraj) in her neighbourhood because of the way he smells. The affair is one-sided as she tries to woo him to escape from her own future of getting hitched to Madhav, a boy selected for her by her parents. Some side-characters are an unnecessary distraction, but the climax is a simple but beautiful surprise.

Memorable moments:

  • The comical interactions between Madhav and Meenakshi as she tries hard to reject his proposals, including one where Madhav's parents ask for her height in order to plan for the size of the couple's bed. LoL!

Fatso! (2012)

Rajat Kapoor's Fatso! is a sweet comedy that makes you laugh, smile and endear yourself to the protagonists. But it mostly makes you realize how valuable your own life is, and how important it is to savor every moment of it before its gone. Beneath the comedy is a layer of human-emotion and love, one that must be understood through the eyes of the lead actors and their situations in the film. Ranvir Shorey as the charming 'Fatso' presents a stark contrast to Gul Panag as the pretty Nandini, but watch the movie to know why need to come together.

Memorable moment:

  • The 5 minute speech at the climax by Sudeep to Nandini, describing all the things he loves in the world will steal your heart and inspire you to love life again...it really will! Don't miss it!

Leader (2010) - (Telugu)

A self-confessed Sekhar Kammula fan, I couldn't help but marvel at the director's inspirational story in Leader. Debutant Rana Daggupati as Arjun Prasad steals the show as the young chief minister of AP determined to free the state of black money. His temperamental act is well complemented by the beautiful Richa Gangopadhyay as Archana, his journalist love-interest. While the romance is a crafty side-track, the real story swells you with pride towards the end, leaving you wondering if you have done your bit for the nation. Mickey Meyer again teams up with Kammula to deliver a melodious soundtrack.

Memorable moments:

  • Arjun's mother telling him that she wanted "him to be a leader, not a politician", Arjun's clinical dialogue delivery.
  • Archana trying out a gun when the CM's escort stops - picturized as part of the lovely track "Aunana Kadana"

What this blog is about?

Greetings Fellow Readers!

Welcome to my blog.

I love watching movies - Hindi, English, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and any other language that provides decent  sub-titles that help me understand. I always appreciate a good story regardless of the language.

Occasionally I will also review previews of movies coming up, so you can ring in the excitement along with me.
